Stop Being the ATM: How to Help Your Kid Start a Business

I love my kids and I'm tired of being their ATM.

The constant "Can I have $20?" is exhausting. Not just because of the money, but because it teaches them that cash is something you ask for, not something you create.

I want my kids to see a problem and know they can get paid to solve it. But there is a huge gap between having a cool idea and convincing a neighbor to hand over a twenty-dollar bill. If you want to know how to help your kid start a business, you have to help them bridge that gap.

Remove "I'm Shy" from the Picture

When my oldest was 9, she wanted to start her first neighborhood service. Being super shy, the "selling" part was the hardest hurdle. To help, we created a new client questionnaire so she would feel confident in her initial meetings and know the right questions to ask.

This is the secret to helping your kid start a business without them getting overwhelmed. You don't just give them a job; you give them a system.

Whether they are pet sitting, washing cars, or helping neighbors with tech, having a professional script changes the dynamic from "asking for a favor" to "offering a service."

Stop Micromanaging and Start Systemizing

We built protocols to keep her safe and her calendar organized. She expanded her marketing efforts and saw her business triple last summer.

None of this happened overnight, but it started with the courage to offer her services to neighbors.

It grew because of the structure we built.

When you are looking for how to help your kid start a business, remember that the "boring" stuff (like intake forms and invoices) is actually what gives them the freedom to succeed.

From "I Want" to "I Earned": How to Help Your Kid Start a Business

I eventually put those same templates and protocols into the Kidpreneur Launch Kit.

It’s on sale for $27. It costs the same as the next toy they’ll ask for, but this one teaches them how to buy it themselves.

To your success (and closing the family ATM),
